3M Enters Wind-Power Industry with a Turbine Protecting Tape

Wind energy is one among the abundantly used renewable sources of power by man. Many wind mills have been set up throughout the world to tend to the power demand. The turbines of these wind mills exposed to all the odds of nature are at a risk of wearing out after using them for a couple of years. 3M, the well-known tape manufacturer has come forwards with Wind Tape in 2007.

The Wind Tape is being used for momentary repair the damaged edges of the turbine blades. This adhesive polyurethane tape can be used to cover the eroded edges and is believed to increase the life time of the blade by a decade. A 54-foot roll of this tape costs around $228 and is premeditated to shield 120-foot fiber glass turbines.
Encouraged by the success of Wind Tape, 3M is planning to bring forth its other wind-power products like tiny glass microspheres which will cut down blade weight and shark-skin like blades which will lessen the pulling force on the blades. These products will help the wind power industry by reducing the expenses of maintenance and repair of the eroded blades and avoid their replacement.
