Alpine Hut
If you were wondering how one could stay warm and cozy right on top of an ice-capped mountain, you must seek the advice of the Department of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Technical University. They have constructed the autonomous alpine shelter at a height of 2,810 meters above sea level. Many students and researchers have already started to use the facility and have spoken of its convenience and safety. They surely were awed, too, by its majestic perch on a snowy peak.

Situated right at the tip of a glacier, it is as remote and far away from any energy source as it could get. However, an innovative mind can take one a long way on the journey towards energy self-sufficiency. The building could be used by mountaineers as a base camp before making an ascent on the Alps.

The dome home rotates and faces the sun right from morning till evening and also saves on electricity that way. The domes are built using a special FSC-certified wood.

If that isn’t all, the dome can withstand hurricane and cyclone level rains. Designer Solaleya is proud to say that the energy saving device produces low consumption levels. The house is both admirable and worthy to own. Looks like Solaleya has a number of plans and designs up its sleeve. The fact that the dome shaped house is a sustainable one makes it all the more attractive and must prove to be an inspiration to other designers who could also go ahead and design buildings and houses that are sustainable.

Woodstation Holds A Cool Answer To Our Boring Alarm Clock Problems
Posted in Eco Art, Gadgets, concept on 10 October 2008

I think we all can very well do with a change in the conventional alarm clock ticking beside our beds. Aren’t we tired of seeing the same old boring pattern. Well, not anymore. Inovaxion has come up with an exquisite timepiece but with a wooden twist. So none of you with taste can actually say “No” to this little wonder that not only tells the time but also doubles up as a weather station.

The Woodstation is actually a collaboration between the French company Inovaxion with a Chinese factory called Aerotime. And the functioning is quite simplistic. The movement sensor in it detects your presence and the screen through the wood gives you the required information like time and weather forecast.

When activated, the Woodstation tracks fluctuations in barometric pressure, indoor relative temperature and indoor relative hygrometry data that enables it to tell you the weather forecast 12 to 24 hours in advance. And of course, there are the regular alarm clock functions.

Big icons indicate the weather in symbols like sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, rainy, snowy and stormy. On top of this, the device can be used with both AC adaptor and batteries.

Water from Air: Courtesy Watermill
Posted in Eco Art, Eco-Friendly, Efficiency, Energy, Environment, Go green, Technology, concept, water on 1 October 2008

With the West in a water crisis, it’s not surprising to see a machine that pulls water from ambient air at West Coast Green. Though not an innovation, these machines require a lot of energy which has been dealt with by Element Four who have addressed the issues of energy use for creating water. The unit uses just 300 watts; a relatively low amount for these machines, the Watermill senses its environment and acts accordingly.
The Watermill checks its environment every three minutes to determine the dew point and keeps itself operating at just a few degrees below that dew point. This way, it maximizes efficiency of the energy it uses to operate by maximizing the amount of water it can pull from the air 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
It can pull an average of 13 quarts of water each day, which is plenty of potable water for an average family of four. The water is essentially distilled, but a filter can be added to restore organic minerals if the user wishes.

And if that wasn’t all, a solar powered version of the machine is in the works and will be available in about six months. So, this one is sure to tackle the water needs and the environmental issues with utmost efficiency.

Hybrid Gas Range: Recycling the Waste Food
Posted in Eco Art, Eco-Friendly, Energy, Environment, Go green, Green, Recycling, concept on 29 September 2008

This may be called optimum utilization of resources or a measure towards being biodegradable. If you have ever pondered over the amount of food waste that becomes a food for the dustbin, this one is sure to put a smile on your face. The innovative Hybrid Gas Range created by award-winning Korean designer Seokmoon Woo, is an amazing concept, utilizing food garbage as an alternate fuel for the gas range. This concept helps reduce food garbage in households while meeting a chunk of their energy needs as well by allowing them to switch between the collected methane and regular gas at the press of a button.
If we change food garbage at home into methane energy, we can cook with methane instead of gas all the time. Considering that the dwindling natural gas resources have raised an alarm worldwide this device is sure to be a boom for the consumer.

The concept allows users to put away their food garbage in a classifier in the center which ferments and creates methane that is used as fuel for the gas range. The resulting waste is dehydrated by the machine and collected in a tank at the bottom that can be disposed off later. Though still a concept, this one is sure to have buyers in the market the day it is launched.

Stick To White To Be Green
Posted in Designer, Earth, Eco Art, Eco-Friendly, Fashion on 25 September 2008

Green
Is the red organic shirt in your wardrobe as harmless as it seems? Think twice. Apparently, despite the availability of a large variety of garments made from organic cotton and hemp, you might still not be getting a fair green deal. The basic business instincts in man should be blame here as more and more manufacturers are at a cost cutting spree.

Reports reveal that cloth companies are outsourcing their fabrics to inexpensive dye houses in Asia that use substandard or banned dyes. The workers at these dye centres are not only paid a measly allowance but they are also unaware of the carcinogenic nature of the chemicals used.
So, what should one do? Well, buy clothes only from known brands. And since they say that natural is the best; do not buy dark or bright colours. Stick to white or anything light and you shall safely be green. Look out for the eco-labelling on garments.

Vote (Eco) Logically!
Posted in Designer, Earth, Eco Art, Eco-Friendly, Eco-friendly products, Environment, Fashion on 24 September 2008

The brand ‘Under the Canopy’ (UTC) has come up with a smart plan to make the environment issues an integral part of the political agenda in America. With just six weeks to the much awaited Election Day, it has come up with a cool t-shirt both for men and women that says ‘Vote Ecologically’.
Displaying the slogan in bold lettering, the chic shirts are made up of 100% cotton and will definitely make head turns. Possibly that is the reason why they have been launched at this time. These shirts are a reminder for every American to cast their vote with a conscience. It is a way to tell the politicians what you feel concerned about so that they discuss and come up with sound environmental ideas to improve the condition of Mother Nature.
Without expressing a bias towards Independent, Republican or Democrat candidates, UTC openly expresses its ‘green’ leanings. The women’s tee comes for $28 while men can get theirs at $ 34. Go ahead and get one for yourself, after all 2% of the earnings go to the Rainforest Foundation.
