Solar Powered Camel: Transporting Vaccines
Posted in Health, Solar on 10 October 2008

We’ve all been brought up hearing fairy tale stories of the wild life acting as a savior of mankind. This will surely be an addition to it as technology takes a leap to bring to you a solar powered camel. Now the name may give you a feeling that it’s a camel powered by the sun so hold my dear. It’s the refrigerator on the camel’s back which is meant to transport vaccines to remote areas. So the challenge of reaching the nomadic communities with heat-sensitive vaccines isn’t a challenge anymore. It’s an ingenious solution to getting them from point A to point B intact.

And you thought that’s all. There’s more to it. When refrigeration is not needed, the solar system provides lighting to the clinic. To back up the solar system, for the rare times that the sun is not shining in the desert, there is also a foot-powered generator. So it’s win/win anyway.

Let’s get nosey!
Posted in Health on 21 September 2008

As a kid I remember hearing about a teeny-weeny bio info that we children believed to be true – Our noses actually grow longer as we grow old. Now that I’m an adult, I find this silly kid talk a bit disturbing. Why is aging such a scary process??? So, I did what we all usually do when faced with a question that we don’t know the answer for; I searched the internet. And guess what I found. Our noses do not grow longer as we grow in years. Wow, wasn’t I relieved!!!
However, the article had a rude shock in store as I read along. Apparently, experts believe that our noses “droop”. Yes, thanks to dear ol’gravitational force the collagen and elastin in our skin break making our skin lose its suppleness. As a result our noses end up drooping down. Here’s more, the process also occurs with our eyelids, ears, breasts and scrotum.
Ouch! That hurt.

What’s organic wine? A question that must have crossed our minds each time the eco-friendly folks uttered the name but we were a li’l embarrassed to ask. Well, here is the dope you wanted. As we all know, grapes are the most pesticide-laden produce, that is exactly why people are preferring to sip on that organic wine than the regular ones. Let me tell you about the various kinds:
1. 100% organic : This mark means that the wine is made from 100% organically grown ingredients with a consistent monitoring.
2. Organic: The wine is 95% organic.
3. Made with organic ingredients: With this mark, the wine is supposed to carry 70% of organic ingredients with perhaps some artificial sulphites.
4. Biodynamic: A concept based on precise observation and the balance of nature, this wine is not only 100% organic but the cultivator has gone a step forward to bring the farming process nature friendly like building his own compost and stuff like that!

Lips sticks with lead
Posted in Fashion, Health, Products on 21 September 2008

And we thought lead in lipsticks was history. But a recent estimation revealed horrific findings. Apparently, an average woman consumes a kilo of lipstick every year, a part of which is the deadly metal lead. Yes, even brands like L’Oreal, Cover Girl and Christian Dior can’t be exonerated from this slow but dangerous health crime. Medical experts are concerned because lead does not have a tendency to get detoxified in fact it is readily stored in the body. So one can imagine the storage of disaster that the fashion woman harbours inside her! The toxic metal is associated with problems of behavioural disorder and miscarriages.
Those who thought they could detect lead by applying lipstick to gold, I’m afraid to say it’s not a safe method. In fact, lead is not even listed as an ingredient on lipstick labels. However, a look at SafeCosmetics.org will equip you will helpful and healthy information.

PETA Calling For Olympian Sushil Kumar
Posted in Go green, Green, Health on 27 August 2008

Sushil Kumar won a bronze at 2009 Beijing Olympics

Olympics bronze medallist Sushil Kumar has indeed become hot property. And it’s none other than PETA who is chasing the brawny wrestler to join hand with them as their vegan ambassador. Chief functionary of PETA (India) Anuradha Sawhney, wrote in a letter to Kumar that her organisation wold like to feature him in their vegetarian ads.
The main reason for roping in Kumar is to show how an all vegetarian diet can give you an Olympic winning muscularity. To this Sawhney added that Kumar’s toned physique can bring the message out loud that when it comes to an actual workout, men should give up meat to achieve maximum performance.
Although, PETA has not received a response from Kumar yet but they are optimistic as most people they approach are more than happy to associate with them. Yes, Amitabh Bachchan, Yana Gupta, Esha Deol, Anil Kumble, John Abraham and Rahul Khanna are just a few of the popular names with them.
