Pierce Brosnan’s Heart Of Green

Pierce Brosnan

One actor we can safely call an eco-lover is Pierce Brosnan. In a recent interview with Reader’s Digest magazine, he shared how the absence of a father in his childhood made him a family man he is today. The former James Bond has 5 kids and wants his “boys to feel that they have a very loving family”. By the way, the doting dad realises the importance of time spent with his children and continues to do so despite busy schedules.
Coming to Brosnan’s environmental initiatives, we are aware of the monetary contributions he has been making to various eco-benefit organisations (buzz is that the figure is over 1 million dollars). But charity begins at home. No one understands it better than Brosnan who carries his passion for nature even to his home. In his words, “We have a compost bin and my boys know how to use it. And they do compost all the food regularly, from where it goes into the garden.”
Wow, isn’t that food for thought! I’m sure not many of us knew of this wonderful way to stay eco-friendly.

China’s First Ever Poultry Waste Biogas Plant
Posted in Animals, Electricity, Environment, Green on 8 August 2008

In current eon, every nation has to face the crisis situation of electricity shortage. To crack this hitch regimes in all states are probing pioneering energy generation prospects. It would be a real bliss, particularly in rural areas if a nation builds up techniques to produce electricity out of fritter away stuff. Lately it has been guesstimated based on a report that electricity generated via cow dung could be of enormous aid as it is capable of fulfilling approximately 3% of US electrical demand. Subsequent to this, one of the largest chicken farms in China has lately set up a chicken waste consumption plant that claims to be one-of-its-kind in the whole country.

The electricity generating poultry waste biogas plant forenamed Beijing Deqingyuan Chicken Farm is sited around 50 kilometers north of Beijing. This chicken waste utilization set up will operate on 220 tones of compost coming out from farm daily to produce electricity as well as heat. Anaerobic digesters supplied with cow’s manure would produce biogas, which would be again employed to stimulate two GE Jenbacher gas engines.

Nearly 14,600 MWH of electricity is anticipated to be produced by this set up every year and it would result in a yearly cutback of $1.2 million in energy overheads. Moreover, it is being said that it will cut down farm’s carbon emissions by 95,000 tones per annum.

I strongly believe other nations must also value this eco project as apart from providing renewable electricity source, this set up would facilitate them in creating a green emanation free environment.

Newer Options in the Area of Renewable Energy Sources - Cow Power!
Posted in Animals, Earth, Efficiency, Energy, Environment on 26 July 2008

Cow power could emerge as one of the green and renewable energy sources to generate electricity in future. Till now the manure produced by bovine and livestock animals has been used in farms only (that too to a certain extent). But now, it can be used to generate electricity which might meet upto 3 % energy (read electricity) consumption needs of entire North America!

The research being conducted by scientists at University of Texas (Austin) believe the results of it will imply on all countries with a large number of livestock (including India). Production of biogas from cow dung is not a new thing and it has been used in rural India to cook food and for other heating purposes. But this research stresses upon the anaerobic digestion (a process which helps in compost formation) of manure which yields energy-rich bio-gas potent enough to generate electricity by rotating standard microturbines.

In recent times, the interest and efforts in analyzing and using cow waste for studying its effect on climate change, has seen an upward trend. The IPCC reports that nitrous oxide and methane (both are Green House Gases) produced by naturally decomposing livestock manure heat up our atmosphere many times more than what CO2 does! Hence, the panel recommends proper utilization of this livestock manure. The latter if utilized fully could generate approximately 100 billion kilowatt hours of electricity (a scenario where the Americans will thank cows profusely for providing resources beyond milk and meat!)

Concerns are raised over the carbon emissions thus procuded by burning of biogas but scientists reassure that, when compared to burning fossil fuels (read coal), burning of biogas leaves a much smaller carbon footprint! Here’s what the scientists- Dr. Michael E. Webber and Amanda D Cuellar, from University of Texas has to say over this: “In light of the criticism that has been leveled against biofuels, biogas production from manure has the less-controversial benefit of reusing an existing waste source and has the potential to improve the environment.”

I’m waiting for the day when bulbs will be lighted by burning of biogas for the latter promises to be an environmentally advantageous and economical energy resource. Hail Cow Power! :D
