Ultra Green Paper

Paper not made from tree is sure to attract everybody’s interest. A Chicago paper company has come up with what they call Ultra Green paper. And the best part is that no trees are cut or water is used for the manufacturing. Made from inorganic mineral powders derived from limestone and calcium carbonate, Ultra Green neither uses chlorine nor becomes yellow or brittle even when exposed to sunlight for long.
Isn’t that just too good to be true? Wait, there’s more. The paper is resistant to water, grease and oils and can easily be used outdoors without any fear of decomposition. On top of this, it is priced 30 per cent below the regular paper because it saves on the water and tree costs. So it seems like a win-win situation for both the producers and the consumers.
By the way, the Environmental Defense calculated that if one ton of Ultra Green paper replaces a ton of traditional paper, 20 trees will be saved.

Hurricane Katrina left some major scars not just in the hearts and minds of the people across the planet but also on the homes of many. These people now find themselves homeless and looking for help. It is in this time of need that Hollywood’s biggest star and his organization has stepped up to lend their helping hand to people of Louisiana. Those hit by hurricane Katrina in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans are having their homes rebuilt and this time with green features.

Brad Pitt’s Make it Right (MIR) initiative recently began construction on several homes that had been wrecked by the hurricane. Contributing to the rebuilding effort following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the Make it Right campaign set a goal of constructing 150 new residences designed by 13 different local, national and international architectural firms. While each design is unique, all the homes are employing sustainable building strategies while taking into consideration the ease of fabrication through replication.
Each home is designed to be built within a budget of $150,000, which has been collected primarily by donations pledged through their website.

This not only helps those in need but also spreads the green wave. It seems Pitt has a classy way of doing things both on and off the screen. Hopefully more such organizations will join in to make the lives of many better.

Plug-In Capable Toyota Prius to Roll out a Year in Advance
Posted in Automobiles, Car, Green, Technology on 3 September 2008

Toyota Prius

Toyota Prius is one of those Plug-In cars that has been eagerly awaited since a long time and while one is still waiting for the big electric vehicle that will apparently change the existing market ways and set a whole new standard, the wait is just cut short by one year. This is absolutely great news for all auto enthusiasts who were waiting for the Prius Electric with great anxiety. The important thing is not so much the fact that it will be out in 2009 but the fact that the stuff under the hood will also roll out a year in advance. This means a giant step forward for the Lithium-Ion Batteries which will be the heart of this beauty.

Toyota’s plug-in capable Prius is getting a big boost for testing, hitting the open road a year ahead of schedule. Several hundred of the PHEVs will be put into government and commercial fleets for field testing by the early 2009. So in just a few more months, we might be able to catch one of the new models out and about. While the plug-in car indeed might hit the roads very soon, one might still have to wait a bit longer before jumping up and down on that prospect.

It is one thing to claim right now that the car would be ready but if the Li-Ion battery technology is not found up to mark by the time then Toyota will rather push the date back instead of taking a risk on the performance aspect. But surely Toyota will do their all to meet the new deadline and let the Prius roar with green energy by the next year.
